Emotional Regulation Therapy

At Growth Psychology in San Francisco, CA, I help young people and their families build emotional regulation skills that support calm decision-making, strong relationships, and greater confidence. I use a thoughtful, science-informed approach that connects emotions, thoughts, behavior, and the brain’s response to stress.

Understanding Emotions Without Judgment

I teach clients that emotions give us information. They are not good or bad, and they are not right or wrong. They signal needs, values, frustrations, fears, hopes, and boundaries. When a young person learns to understand emotions instead of avoid or fight them, they can respond with more flexibility.
Emotional regulation begins with awareness. I help clients identify what they feel, where they feel it in the body, what triggered it, and how intense it feels. We may explore body cues such as a tight chest, racing thoughts, clenched muscles, stomach discomfort, or a faster heartbeat. These cues help clients notice emotional shifts earlier.

How I Build Regulation Skills

In therapy, I combine psychoeducation, practice, reflection, and real-life planning. I explain how the amygdala and prefrontal cortex interact when emotions intensify, and I help clients understand why strong feelings can make it harder to think clearly in the moment.
Sessions may include diaphragmatic breathing, body scans, visualization, mindfulness, grounding strategies, and other coping tools. I do not expect clients to master these skills instantly. Instead, I help them practice in a supportive setting, then plan how to use those skills at school, at home, with peers, or during stressful transitions.

Connecting Thoughts, Feelings, and Behavior

As clients gain confidence, I help them examine the thoughts that accompany strong emotions. We look at what they tell themselves about themselves, others, and the world. Then we evaluate whether those thoughts feel accurate and helpful. This process may include identifying thinking errors, reframing unhelpful thoughts, and testing new responses through behavioral experiments.
I also incorporate empathy and perspective-taking. When young people understand that others have thoughts and feelings too, they can navigate conflict, frustration, disappointment, and social stress with more maturity.
